Natural Hair Care Made Easier

Natural Hair Care Made Easier

When it comes to natural hair care, where do you spend the majority of your time? Experience has taught me that it is very easy to get sucked down the rabbit hole of natural hair care. We are so consumed by the many processes we’ve created that we lose sight of how to maintain our hair correctly. The steps designed for managing natural hair have become time-consuming, tiresome, and minimally effective. The reality, it doesn’t have to be that way.Natural hair care can be easier.

Our natural experience is only as complex as we make it, and we have made it very complicated. The great news, it can be easier! If you’re looking for better ways to care for your hair or want to take control of your natural experience, you’re in the right spot. This week we’re exploring simple steps you can take to help make natural hair care easier.

This too much

For a  long time, I believed that natural hair care had to be hard and overly complicated. After my first big chop, a lot of the information available suggested that I would have to put in some serious hours of work if I wanted decent hair. There were nightly routines, morning routines, and even mid-week routines. I honestly couldn’t keep up, nor did I have the desire to. As a new mom working ten-hour shifts at the hospital, I needed easy, fast, and efficient. So, I set out to find a better way, and I did!

Lessons learned

It took a little while and a severe mindset shift, but I decided to give straightforward natural hair care a try.  No overnight success stories, but there were incremental improvements, and when I became consistent, the results were long-lasting. The road to natural hair care made easier still requires work, but it is more enjoyable, requires less time, and promotes your hair’s overall health. If you’re looking for a better way to manage your natural hair consider these simple steps to ensure your success

You have to be able to love and appreciate your hair in its natural state

This requires understanding the key characteristics of your hair, accepting that all hair is not silky, all hair is not shiny, and some curls may not hang down (they may grow up/out). If you cannot appreciate the unique characteristics of your hair for what they are, chances are, you will have a hard time accepting, loving, and adequately caring for your hair.

It doesn’t have to be perfect

We have done a great job of expecting perfection from ourselves regardless of our level of experience, consistency, and ability to complete a task adequately.  This strict requirement of perfection causes us to miss the beauty we create. It creates a stigma around what beautiful curls look like and is exhausting. Grant yourself some grace. Appreciate where you are, what you’re learning, and the fact that you are working towards healthy hair!

Consistency is key

I will admit when I first decided to take a simplified approach to natural hair care, the appeal to fall back to what was familiar was strong. Although it was easier, the comfort and familiarity of doing the most had a loud call. Resist the urge and remain consistent. You’ll be surprised how the health of your hair improves, your frustrations decline, and your free time increases.

If it is not serving you, let it go

This lesson applies to all the extra things we think we should do for our hair. Once you accept the facts surrounding your hair’s unique characteristics, a lot of the things thought you needed will inevitably become unnecessary. Deciding to rock your natural curls does not require the significant addition of extra steps, products, or processes to make it beautiful. Evaluate where you’re spending the bulk of your time and the products you’re using. Then, determine if they’re necessary. Surprisingly, you may find that they are not.
