September: National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
Did you know:
- One in 5 children in the United States have obesity.
- Between 2011-2014 21.4% of Non-Hispanic black children and adolescents 6–11 years of age, were classified as obese
- Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
- In 2015, African Americans were 20% less likely to engage in active physical activity as Non-Hispanic whites.
- Deaths rates from heart disease and stroke are higher for African Americans as compared to whites.
The good news
Childhood obesity can be prevented. In honor of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Bold Kulture Beauty encourages your family to make healthy changes together.
We can all use this month to raise awareness about the obesity epidemic and show people how they can help work toward a solution.
Here are just a few ideas:
- Get active outside! Walk around the neighborhood, go on a bike ride, or play basketball at the park.
- Limit screen time. Keep screen time (time spent on the computer, watching TV, or playing video games) to 2 hours or less a day.
- Make healthy meals. Buy and serve more vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain foods.
- Motivate teachers and administrators to make schools healthier. Help them provide healthy food options and daily physical activities for students.
- Ask doctors, pharmacists, and nurses to be leaders in their communities by supporting programs to prevent childhood obesity.
Taking small steps as a family can help your child stay at a healthy weight.
Healthy bodies are beautiful bodies. Please take the time to be aware of the different issues that may affect you and make a conscious effort to prevent them. For more information check out these healthy resources from https://healthfinder.gov
