I Am Not My Hair

I Am Not My Hair

I recently saw a post where a fellow natural was agonizing over how to wear her hair for an interview. The end result, though not in its natural state, was beautiful. While I am sure she rocked her interview; I often wonder how much more confident we would be if we could present our true selves in any meeting, interview, or work scenario without judgement.

We’ve heard countless stories of people being forced to choose between rocking their natural hair and getting put out of school, getting a job, keeping a job, career advancement, and even participating in extracurricular activities.  Seen heroic protest and displays of strength from children and adults alike. Heard The outcry over the obvious injustice and stood in solidarity with other naturals in the struggle.

Hope on the horizon

Now, In 2019, governments are tasked with putting laws in place to give us the “freedom” to do what every other human being has been able to do since the beginning of life – wear our hair in its natural state (insert eye roll). Living by Eurocentric standards of what is proper, professional, and beautiful is oppressive and stifling. We should be free and comfortable enough to be ourselves, natural hair and all.

Is hope on the horizon? Well, the jury is still out, but New York City recently passed laws banning hair discrimination; making it an extension of equally deplorable racial discrimination. That’s right, in New York City, people will now be able work, live, and play with their hair in its natural state with out fear of discrimination. Prayerfully, the rest of society will catch up.

My peaceful resistance

I wear my hair naturally every day. I no longer second guess my hair or make agonizing decisions based off of how others want me to look so they can be comfortable. Free from fear, judgement, and shame I’m setting my own rules and finally putting me first. I am beautiful, my hair is beautiful, and so are you! My positive qualities go beyond the coils that spring from my scalp and it only takes me acknowledging this truth to make it so. Self-love wins, courage wins, boldness wins, and if you join me you win too! Stand proud and be the change you want to see.

Share your thoughts! I’d like to hear the deets on any positive or negative experiences. Don’t be shy. Your truth may be just what we all need to hear.  Until next week #GOBOLDLY
