For The Love Of Curls
Thinking back to before I started my natural journey sometimes makes me cringe. I remember thinking that natural hair wasn’t for me. Turning my back on the creamy crack was not an option. Believing my hair would never look right, that it was too nappy and too corse and all the other harmful things many of us have said and or heard about natural hair.
Now about six years later, I can proudly say that I was wrong. I am so in love with my hair, and more importantly, I want to show others that those things we thought aren’t right. For me, natural hair is not a fad for a trend; it’s a lifestyle, a part of who I am, something to be loved and enjoyed, not a burden or something to be ashamed of.
Did I come to this realization overnight? No. Did I struggle often? Of course. Did I wish I could have started with the knowledge that I now have? Definitely. Through the ups and downs, I have learned to set realistic expectations, to not take my self or my hair too seriously, and that these tightly coiled curls are beautiful.
This week we’re taking a closer look at loving our natural hair and why we should grant ourselves some grace on this natural journey.
All curls need love
I wear my hair natural daily. In doing so, I am affirming to myself and others that I want to play by my own set of rules. Gone are the days of second-guessing my hair and being ashamed. I’m setting my standards and embracing my crown in all of its curly wounder!
If you are deciding to rock your natural curls, don’t be ashamed. Let self-love, courage, and boldness win. Embrace your curls, nurture your curls, love your curls, rock your curls, and be BOLD when you do it!
Grant yourself some grace
As a woman with natural hair and a person who is inspired to help others on their natural journey, I know how essential confidence and positive self-image is when it comes to wearing your natural hair. I also know how damaging comparison and unrealistic expectations can be. Do not compare your journey, your hair, or its individual and unique characteristics to anyone else’s journey, You don’t know where they started or what it took to get them where they are.
Instead, focus on getting to know the critical elements of your hair, adding consistency to your routine, and being intentional with your products and practices. Grant yourself the grace you need to learn, grow, and adjust on this natural journey.
Curls just want to have fun
The most important thing to remember on this journey is to have fun. Never take yourself or your hair too seriously. Bad hair days happen to the best of us. Don’t worry about it. Learn to be flexible, how to identify areas where you need more practice, and how to appropriately approach a situation so that your hair doesn’t turn into a total fail.
We have lived under the myth that natural that is is challenging and burdensome, that it is not beautiful, and that only certain textures are appealing for far too long. For the love of beautiful curls everywhere, let go of these misconceptions and let your curls LIVE!
