Confessions of a Curly Girl: There is Beauty in Vulnerability
More now than ever, I have become aware that talk is cheap. You can’t just say things. You have to back them up. This fact is usually easy to apply when dealing with others because you have some form of accountability. If you don’t do what you said, you ruin relationships.
What about the words we give to ourselves? How easy is it for us to break our promises to ourselves, forget what we said, or push it off? Where is the accountability when you’re the only one that knows the promise?
Recently, I realized that I had been taking my word too lightly. Things have been happening so beautifully fast that I often overlooked the promises I made to myself concerning this journey. In the rush of excitement, it’s easy to spit out mantras and adages without ever being called to the carpet to rely on those truths to manifest in your life. When things are good, it’s easy to be positive, but what about when things get challenging?
It’s easy to give others advice, but can you live by your words as well?
If you’re reading this, I assure you that I can. Getting here wasn’t easy, and I’m still working through it, but I am so much better for it.
I started this post intending to write about how hard this has been for me. Instead, I would like to share with you what I have learned about myself in hopes that it will be as inspiring to you as it has been for me.
He validates me
I am fulfilling a mission that is far greater than me as an individual. My prayer daily is that God will use me. That in all in I do, it will bring him glory. You may wonder how this is possible as you view this as merely a beauty blog, but I assure you it is so much more. Fueled by mission, purpose, and passion, I empower Black women to embrace the fullness of their beauty, build confidence, foster self-love, and embrace themselves and their curls, and confidently and comfortably master natural hair care!
This road is tough, but I am tougher
Growing this platform and my business has been one of the hardest things that I have had to do. There is a certain level of comfort that comes with familiar things, but this journey has been NONE of that. There has been some serious stretching, growth, life-changing, and mindset shifting taking place over here. None of which was particularly comfortable or familiar, but hindsight proves it was worth it. This process is new, and every day, I’m battling shyness, insecurities, and comfort to fulfill a mission. There is no familiarity in any of this, yet I’m here doing it and being very proud of myself in the process. I have met fears and challenges head-on, and I’m still standing.
I have to believe in myself first
Everyone will not agree with me or like what I am saying, and that’s OK. I have to be 100% confident in the moves and choices that I make. If I lack confidence or don’t support myself, how can I expect anyone else to believe what I’m saying? I have to be my biggest fan and most graceful critic. Expecting others to do what I have to do for myself will only lead to self-doubt and insecurity.
There is beauty in freedom
I am releasing myself from fear and judgment of others. As I began writing this, I was struggling with the decision to put this on paper. If you are reading this, it means purpose won. I am practicing what I’m preaching, and despite fear, hesitancy, or whatever challenges my forward momentum, I’m committed to pushing through to what’s next.
Life is so many things, but we contain more power than we recognize. Don’t be bound by fear, the judgment of others, or self-doubt. Take yourself seriously and hold yourself accountable for the truths you speak to yourself and others.
Don’t stop there. Let that freedom and transparency flow to every part of your life, including natural hair care. The same principles and lessons apply. It’s time to get honest about your natural hair journey, where you are, and how you can better position yourself to get where you want to be.
